Images used to be a way for us to understand the world. Nowadays, images are everywhere, and no longer an interface for us to learn about the world, since they have replaced reality and become another reality of their own.One day, I was looking at the plants on my balcony, and suddenly, I was in a trance, as if they were presented in a different form. So, I started to think, are these sudden images instinctively evoked by my imagination, or is it my experience with contemporary images that affect the nature of how I view “things"? The images that unknowingly interfere and replace themselves in our lives is similar to our usual experience of using the Internet – it implicitly intervenes in our daily lives. There are 2 modes in Unknown. The 2 projects are connected via Wi-Fi, so when the viewers of Above the Time open or close their eyes, it will simultaneously trigger Unknown to switch between the 2 modes. If the images change between plain or mirrored surfaces, the viewers will not know it is caused by disturbance. I used 3D scanning to create Unknown. I scanned the original form of a plant into a model, removed the original 2D texture, and transformed it into “what I see”. I added a reflective material, so that the model could reflect the projection in the virtual space. The reflections are videos that I have uploaded on the Internet before and saved in my hard drive.
